Inside JFK Airport’s Abandoned 1960s TWA Terminal

TWA JFK 1

Photographer Max Touhey was recently granted permission to photograph John F. Kennedy International Airport’s historic TWA Flight Center and what he captured is simply amazing. The abandoned terminal was once the center of all air travel through New York as its opening in 1962 marked a shift in air travel history in which it allowed middle-class Americans to afford plane tickets. And while the TWA terminal is considered one of the nation’s most inspiring preservation stories, the design in which architect Eero Saarinen used is a perfect elaboration of the jet-age and the golden age of flying in America. The now defunct terminal since 2001 is set to be refurbished and reopen as a boutique hotel.
